Ever Wondered How To Change The Light Globe In A Downlight?

Have you ever wondered how to replace your halogen downlight globes? It can be very tricky, watch this video to see how it’s done!

Troy from Florance Electrical Darwin is going to perform a quick demonstration on how to remove a LED downlight bulb.

There are two type of designs with down lights. One is a simple turn clockwise and the centre of the downlight with fall out of the ceiling to allow access to the light globe.

The other simply pulls straight down! In this video, Troy is working on a downlight that pulls straight down.

Be careful whilst checking which was the downlight centre ring comes free as if you pull too hard it may damage the gyprock ceiling.

The wiring behind this type of downlight videoed is extra low voltage [12V] and very safe for anybody to work on. You can simply unplug the globe from the cable connector and replace in the existing clamp inside the centre ring of the downlight.

The new globe simply plugs into the existing cable connector. Now, just re-install in the opposite method.

Push the centre of the downlight fitting up into the existing frame and turn anti-clockwise whilst ensuring the threads of the fitting line up. It is that easy!

There is another type however, called 240V halogen down lights. These down lights use a GU10 type globe and the connection points where the globe slots into are live 240V.

Ensure to always have the switch or entire lighting circuit turned off for safety reasons when you are replacing halogen light globes.

If your downlight still does not function once the globe is replaced it is a possibility that the transformer behind the downlight that changes the voltage from LV 230V to ELV 12V is faulty.

Occasionally this transformer is plugged into a socket that can be safely unplugged and replaced, other times it is hardwired into the electrical circuit.

Please take care and if you are unsure always call a licenced electrician as you only get one life, don’t risk it taking unnecessary risks.

We would suggest that the most cost effective option would be to replace the down light with a LED down light if the halogen globe replacement does not work.

This is because as the technology is now older, the price of purchasing these products has fallen significantly making them a cost effective option as replacement.

There are many other benefits with changing to LED down lights including: Reduced energy costs, lower maintenance costs, longer fitting life span and reduced heat emitted by the light meaning that air conditioners will have less heat to remove from a room.

    We’ve disconnected our two prong halogen downlight from the transformer cable, but we’re having problems reconnecting. There doesn’t appear to be two sockets on the cable to insert the globe back into despite the fact that it was obviously removed from two sockets. Can you please tell us what we’ve missed here? Is there a trick to reinserting the prongs that is not obvious to us? Thank you, John Comber.

    So that we can best help, can you email a photo of the cable and globe to – and I will get back to you asap with an answer.

    Essentially, the two prongs on the halogen light globe will either push into and grab the silicone cable connector on the ELV 12V side of the transformer or alternatively, some brands use a flat head screw to clamp the halogen globe to the silicone lead.

    Nice info. Just wanted to double check with the two pin connection. I just pulled an old one out and one of the pins stayed stuck in the connector. Is it safe for me to use pliers and pulled the broken pin out. You mentioned it’s low voltage or have I read that wrong
